Susa, Shusha, and the Tomb of Daniel

Susa was one of the Achaemenid captials of Persia, about 2500 years ago. Now it's a small town. Very little remains of the ancient palace, but the interesting site here is the tomb of the biblical prophet Daniel. Its conical minaret makes a conspicuous landmark

Like most mosques in the mid-east this one has a courtyard with a fountain and a place for ablutions before prayer. The courtyard is also a pleasant social center with people chatting and children playing.

This ornate golden grillework in which lie the remains of the prophet Daniel (Peace be upon him) actually turns out to be a very standard style, common to the tombs in various shrines. The shrine is divided into men's and women's sides with a wall cutting across the middle of the tomb itself so that on either side the faithful can touch the tomb and pray.

Not far from Susa is Shusha. ("My sister Cherise saucily sashays from Susa to Shusha."Can you say that 5 times fast?) A dam in Shusha provides hydroelectric power, and the cascades from the dam have been arranged into a beautiful water park.
