Between the old world and the new, Iceland straddles a divide between tectonic plates. Through this crack in the Earth's surface comes geothermal heat that warms greenhouses so that one of Iceland's principle exports is bananas! When I was there they were also looking at a natural scheme for waste disposal using alligators to devour the garbage. Geysers drive up shots of steam through the ice. |

Of course this Viking outpost also served provided a base for some of the earliest European explorations of America. The historical museum in Reykjavik detailed the story of a Viking woman who went to America over a thousand years ago and bore her children there. When she became a widow she entered a nunnery, and as a Sister she ended her years in Rome. For centuries codfishing was so central to the Icelandic economy, the national coat of arms was a codfish! |
